Weekly Traffic Volume Report

The Traffic Volume report estimates the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for interstate highways and how the total travel measured by VMT compares with travel that occurred in the same week of the previous year. The VMT is further split into passenger vehicle and truck components. The information gives new insights into the effect on traffic by storm activity, economic fluctuations, and other variables that could not be evaluated using the monthly report.

Attention!
A Path to Move Forward with the Special Weekly Reporting
  • Starting with the week of April 4, 2022, the FHWA Office of Highway Policy Information (HPPI) will cease to produce and publish its Special Issue - Weekly Traffic Volume Report (Interstate) in its current format and timeline.
  • Under the new plan, HPPI will develop and publish a monthly report covering four (4) weekly data points using State highway agency collected and submitted monthly traffic monitoring data.
  • The new monthly special report will be released approximately 31 days after the closing of the month.
  • In December 2022, HPPI will review this special report again regarding its content, value, technical approaches (e.g., creating an actual index), potential improvements (e.g., defining the number of weeks, floating holiday date issue), and potential alternative data sources.
